How Do You Treat Pericardial Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive form of cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. Caused by asbestos, mesothelioma has no known cure and has a very poor prognosis. According to a report in 2017 by Centers of Disease Control, 2,400-2,800 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in U.S. each year. People who have been exposed to asbestos have the highest risk of developing mesothelioma.
For pericardial mesothelioma, it is an extremely rare cancer that attacks the lining of heart (pericardium) and it is very deadly. As we know that there is no known cure to remove mesothelioma, how are we supposed to do to treat the patients who are diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma? There are ways just like the ways of treating common mesothelioma, those are surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Even though the tumor is still stuck in your heart and causes lots of pain, at least you can still survive and increase your lifespan.
1. Surgery
Surgery
is the first and successful treatment option for treatment. At the beginning of
tumor localized in the heart and only one side of mesothelium. It will be
easier to remove it. The process of surgery will be the removal of the
pericardiectomy, or removal of lining of the heart. A pericardiocentesis can
also be performed to remove fluid and relieve pressure on the heart. In this
case, palliative surgery is very necessary to remove the symptoms that cause
pain in the heart.
2. Radiation
This
method can be performed after the surgery process or when the cancer worsen and
goes to the next stage. The radiation using high-energy x-rays will remove the
cancer cells. However, it will leave a burn effect on skin and

3. Chemotherapy
Along
with the radiation, chemotherapy can be performed when the cancer goes to the
worse level. Chemotherapy is very
effective and viable form of treatment, viable for patients with all 4 stages
of malignant mesothelioma. By using drugs to ease the pain in the heart, it will
be easier to do the treatment.
If
the patients respond well, these treatment options can provide significant
life-extending benefits. Especially if the patient is in good health before the
treatment begins, there is a good opportunity that they may gain more lives for
months or even years.
What is the real cause of mesothelioma? In many studies, the
causes are actually still unclear. The fact that this cancer killed many people
had become a frightening story for the world. However, it is possible that the
main cause is asbestos exposure. Asbestos are fibers that are microscopically
small and very friable. It means that they are liable to break and become
airborne. When that happens, people breathe them without knowing it. The fibers
stuck then burrow into the lungs and other organs, lodging there, as well as in
the protective linings of those organs, or mesothelium.
This is truly awful to know that this cancer has become
notorious in killing people, especially the rare pericrdial mesothelioma. Even
though there are treatments which can reduce the risk of death for a while, the
cancer may grow up and leech the lives of the patient continuously. Hopefully
there will be the cure to heal this deadly cancer. There must be a way to find or
create it for the sake of many lives in the world.
